Qutub Minar

The Qutub Minar, the tallest brick tower in the world is located in Mehrauli in South Delhi. The name of the minaret was kept after Qutubuddin Aibak, the man who initiated its construction. His successor and son-in-law, Iltutmish, later completed it. Inspired by the Minaret of Jam in Afghanistan, it was built in 1193 AD. It is one of the best monuments of the Indo-Islamic Architecture of the Mughal Era.

A UNESCO World Heritage Site, the Qutub Minar is the highest tower in the world with a height of 72.5 meter with 379 steps from the bottom leading to the top.

The Minar is narrowing upwards. The diameter of the foundation is 14.3 m while the crest floor has a diameter of 2.7 m. It is made of red and buff sandstone. Aibak constructed the first floor and Iltutmish added the other storeys. All the storeys are surrounded by projected balconies encircling the Minar and supported by stone brackets. The first storey and its balcony have the curved and tube designs. The second storey has only curved design while the third storey has only cylinder designs.

The Qutub Minar is decorated with flower-patterned ornamentation and arabesque. The writings on the facade of the Minar suggest that Firoz Shah Tughlaq (AD 1351-88) and Sikandar Lodi (AD 1489-1517) repaired it. Firoz Shah revamped the top floor and added marble to the structure. Qutub Minar is one of the most famous tourist destinations of India.
